Ash is a symbol of changes, passage and rebirth. From the other side it is a sign of penance and one of the most important symbols of the Vanitas theme.
Diana Lelonek refers also to the very popular catholic rural ritual during which people’s heads are strewed with ash. It means penance and reminds about fragility of human life.
The author strews ash and by this gesture the she refers to all of these meanings.
